  • The Argus Courier published Cheerleading is a Real Sports Test.
  • CBS and Patch reported on Adriana Douglas drowning at a hotel swimming pool while attending a cheer competition.
  • ABC and CBS published stories on 4 University of Kansas cheerleaders that were suspended over a KKK Snapchat picture.

January is home to one of the busiest cheerleading weekends of the year. Here’s what else took place during the month.

  • On January 4th Jezebel published Op-Ed: Cheerleaders Don’t Need to Be Paid Since They ‘Work Closely’ with Rich Athletes, questioning a comment made in a separate editorial.
  • Also on January 4th, Daily Journal published Deaf Student Named to Oklahoma’s All-State Cheerleading Team, recognizing a young athlete’s accomplishment.
  • On January 8th The Street published Varsity Brands Wins Big in Battle Between Alabama, Clemson Cheerleaders, our only mention of the college football championship.
  • Also on January 8th, The Charlotte Observer published South Charlotte Cheerleaders Make Sacrifices to be All-Stars, regarding Cheer Extreme athletes Lexi Davis and Julia Margiotti.
  • On January 9th Hollywood Life published Buffalo Bills Cheerleaders: The Crazy Rules They Have To Follow To Stay On The Team, about a bit of craziness.
  • On January 12th the Point Park Globe published Cheer and Dance Becomes Official Sport, taking about the NAIA school recognizing this activity.
  • Also on January 12th, USA Today published Cheerleading in the Olympics and More With Varsity Brands Founder Jeff Webb, covering a range of topics.
  • The 2016 edition of UCA and UDA College Nationals took place in Orlando. (Press Release)
    • Kentucky.com published Kentucky Squad Wins 21st National Cheerleading Title; Morehead Sweeps its Division.
    • IUHoosiers.com published IU Cheerleading Claims Fourth National Title.
    • AL.com published Alabama Cheerleaders Finish Second, Third in UCA National Championships.
  • On January 15th the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published Must-See Atlanta Brothers Tumbling at University of Kentucky, about the Marsh brother.
  • Dallas News published Debut of UIL Cheerleading Earns Shout-Outs Despite Rather Modest Turnout at UT-Arlington, about the premier of a new championship in Texas.
  • On January 25th This is Local London published North London’s Got Talent: Fame All Star Cheerleaders from Southgate Looking Forward to Going Local After European Adventure.
  • Finally, the 2016 version of NCA High School Nationals took place in Dallas.
