New Athlete Membership Program Starts August 1, 2014
The full implementation of USASF Athlete ID in the 2013-14 season has seen more than 100,000 athletes to date registered in the program. Knowing who, how many and at what levels all star athletes are competing by verifying their ages and connecting them to specific programs and teams has elevated the level of safety and integrity of the sport, ultimately putting all star on a comparable footing with other organized youth sports.
The USASF was founded with the core principle of making all star a safer sport by establishing fair and consistent rules and competition standards. Coach credentialing was added to confirm coach proficiency and add another level of safety for athletes. Athlete Membership is the logical next step in evolving all star to be widely recognized as a legitimate sport.
Coaches, owners and event producers expressed support at every Regional Meeting during summer 2013 for charging a fee for Athlete Membership beginning with the 2014-15 membership season so that the USASF could provide full support for athletes through their current programs and through additional accident and catastrophic insurance benefits.
The topic came to the USASF Board of Directors meeting in November and December. After considering member input and reviewing financial projections for 2014 and potential expenses directly related to Athlete Membership benefits, the Board discussed fee levels that would cover expenses for benefits to athletes while maintaining the organization’s financial integrity and independence. A unanimous vote was taken to set an annual fee of $30 for Athlete Membership effective August 1, 2014 for the 2014-15 season.
More information will be available so that programs can prepare in advance for the coming season.
