Here’s what made the news in July, starting with the passing of Herkie:

  • On July 1st Lawrence “Herkie” Herkimer passed. The news was covered by Cheer! Daily, The New York Times, and BBC, among others.
  • On July 2nd the San Francisco Business Times published Go Team! California Bill Proposes Cheerleaders as Employees.
  • On July 3rd KPBS.com published San Diego Lawmaker Pushes For Cheerleader Protections.
  • On July 6th a press release titled Varsity Spirit Honored with National Federation of State High School Associations’ American Tradition Award was released.
  • On July 9th Buzzfeed published What’s The Most Annoying Misconception People Have About Cheerleading?.
  • On July 10th Varsity announced the Varsity All Star Judges Membership & Training Conference.
  • On July 17th Cheer Professional published Owner’s Manual: Craig El of Ultimate Athletics.
  • On July 18th The Independent published Oakland Raiderettes: Cheerleaders Celebrate New Laws that Mean they will be Treated as Employees.
  • On July 21st Houston Press published Varsity Brands Owns Cheerleading and Fights to Keep it From Becoming an Official Sport.
  • On July 22nd the Star Phoenix published Competitive Cheerleading Injuries Soar.
  • On July 27th Seventeen published Cheerleader Bullied Because of Her Looks Shakes Off Haters to Win Beauty Pageant.
  • Jammy ended the month by announcing Molly Whiting as the new JAM Brands dance director. 
  • At some point in July the USASF adjusted it’s social media accounts. The Facebook pages are now USASF, USASF Cheer, and USASF Dance and the Twitter accounts are now @USASFCheer and @USASFDance.

  • On April 11th the Daytona Beach News-Journal published Cheer Championships Give Daytona Tourism Boost.
  • On April 15th High School OT published NFHS Looks to Minimize Risk in Cheerleading With New Rules.
  • On April 17th the Baker Orange published Cheer Should be Considered Sport.
  • On April 17th the News & Observer published Girls Leap at the Chance to Do New Sport: Stunt.
  • On April 18th the Philippines Star published Bulldogs Vie in World Cheerleading.
  • On April 23rd the Advertiser published 8 Things You May Not Have Known About Cheerleading.
